Catholic Schools Week Activities, Events Announced

The annual celebration of Catholic education will take place this week at St. Theresa School in Hellertown and St. Michael the Archangel Primary and Middle schools in Upper Saucon Township. The theme for this year's Catholic Schools Week is "Faith, Academ

* On Tuesday, Jan. 31, primary school students will be stuffing bears beginning at 1pm. The handmade bears were sewn by the Crazy Quilters quilting guild. After stuffing, finished bears will be donated to local hospitals to be used as "Boo Boo Bears" for children receiving emergency care.

* On Wednesday, Feb. 1, after celebrating the academic achievements of middle school students, St. Michael the Archangel School alumnus Adam Ballek, currently serving as financial director for Congressman Charlie Dent (R-15), will address the middle school student body.

* On Wednesday, Feb. 1, St. Michael the Archangel School parent Roey Ebert will conduct a writers' workshop with primary school students beginning at 9am. Ebert is the author and illustrator of the newly released book, "Put It Back, Jack."

* On Friday, Feb. 3, beginning at 8:15am, middle school students will prepare bagged lunches for the homeless and needy who are cared for by New Bethany Ministries in Bethlehem.

* A parent-student variety show will be held on Friday, Feb. 3 beginning at 1:30pm at the primary school.

The following information is courtesy of , which is located at 300 Leonard Street, Hellertown. The school educates children from kindergarten throught eighth grade:

* On Monday, Jan. 30 there will be a kick-off to “Souper” week, with students requested to donate a can of soup for a parish food bank. In keeping with the football theme, this will be a student dress-down day in NFL Football jerseys and colors. The afternoon will be filled with fun and games with grade-level buddies (classes will perform cheers).

* On Tuesday, Jan. 31 a School Day Open House will be held. Visitors to the school will have an opportunity to see the leadership program at work from 1 to 2pm, and a leadership recognition assembly will be held in Friendship Hall at 2pm. The first Student Leaders of the Month will be named at this assembly (one from kindergarten through second grade; one from third through fifth grades; and one from sixth through eighth grades), and other students will receive awards for honor roll, sports and other academic contests they have participated in throughout the year.

* On Wednesday, Feb. 1 students will collect food coupons to be used by military families (even expired coupons may be collected). At 1:15pm, a representative from U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey’s office will visit the school to meet with students from grades 6-8. The representative will speak about the importance of participation in government. Students may also wear red, white and blue socks and neckties or hair ties in keeping with Wednesday's patriotic theme. Lastly, students in kindergarten through fifth grade will celebrate the 100th day of school by bringing in 100 pennies. They will use the pennies in activities to develop math skills such as counting, grouping, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, measurement and geometry. After the activities are completed, all pennies will be donated to the Holy Childhood Association.

* On Thursday, Feb. 2 a Mad Science Assembly will be held in Friendship Hall at 9:30am, which all grades will attend. At 1pm a Holy Childhood Presentation will be held in Friendship Hall, and at 1:15pm an 8th grade digital storytelling assembly will be held in Friendship Hall, with all grades attending.

* On Friday , Feb. 3 a School Mass with blessing of throats for the Feast of St. Blaise, followed by Exposition, will be held at 9am. All are welcome to join the school for mass. The day will continue with eucharistic adoration, a school-wide retreat and noon dismissal. A faculty and staff appreciation luncheon will conclude the day.
