Williams Twp. Wants to Use Compost Center
Hellertown Borough Manager Cathy Kichline announced that Williams Township officials are interested in an arrangement that would allow them to deposit yard waste and leaves from their township at the Saucon Valley Compost Center.
Hellertown Borough Manager Cathy Kichline recently told borough council members that Williams Township officials are interested in paying an annual fee to deposit yard waste and leaves at the Saucon Valley Compost Center.
The center is located on Springtown Hill Road in Lower Saucon Township and is used by residents of both the borough and the township to drop off residential yard waste materials.
Kichline said it was Williams officials who approached and township and borough officials about a possible agreement, which would not open the facility up to Williams Township residents.
The Saucon Valley Compost Center committee reviewed the Williams request and is "agreeable" to it, with some stipulations, Kichline told council.
Among the proposed stipulations are:
- A $3,000 annual fee/renewal agreement.
- All yard waste brought to the center must be inspected.
- Yard waste from Williams Township would only be delivered on days when the compost center is not open to residents.
"There are a few loose ends we need to tie up" before voting on a possible agreement, she said.
Councilman Tom Rieger said he would like to see the borough "examine the...efficiencies that could happen (at the compost center)," now that it's been successfully operating for several years.
Rieger said he thinks the borough is currently "shouldering a lot of the operational side of that compost center."
"We'll be talking about this in the near future again," council president Phil Weber said at the conclusion of the discussion.
