Things Going Smoothly at Pool, Councilwoman Says

Several weeks into the 2013 season, things are going swimmingly at the Hellertown Community Pool, according to borough councilwoman Gail Nolf.

Hellertown Borough Councilwoman Gail Nolf reported to other council members Monday that it's been smooth sailing so far this summer at the Hellertown Community Pool.

Last summer council voted to raise admission rates mid-summer, following a slew of complaints related to pool patron behavior and other problems.

After the 2012 season ended, an ad hoc committee was formed to re-evaluate pool polices, rates procedures, with some changes implemented prior to this year's opening.

Nolf said Hellertown Police have been patrolling the pool on a daily basis to help maintain the family-style atmosphere that many local patrons value.

She referred to a recent incident in which "somebody tried to sneak something in," but said that the "search process worked, and everybody understood (why it was used)."

Hellertown Public Works Director Tom Henshaw told council there have been no issues with the pool's new liner, which was installed prior to its opening in June.

The liner project ran behind schedule, which delayed the pool's opening by 12 days.

Henshaw said the water temperature in the pool has risen to a balmy 85 degrees because of the new liner's soundness and because of the recent hot weather.

Mayor Richard Fluck also complimented Henshaw on the recent installation of a new ladder at the pool.
