Scout Proposes Kiosk at Tumminello Property

The borough-owned property will become a park near the Saucon Rail Trail, west of Main Street in Hellertown. Lower Saucon Township resident Vincent Behe plans to build an information kiosk there as an Eagle Scout project.

A Lower Saucon Township Life Scout received conditional permission from Hellertown Borough Council Sept. 17 to construct a wooden information kiosk on the Tumminello property, which is being developed as a passive park at the borough's south end.

The Tumminello property is strategically located between Main Street and the rail trail, which is why it's expected to become an important recreational bridge between the Route 412 corridor and the trail in years to come.

Vincent Behe, who is a member of Hellertown's Troop 311, said he plans to build the kiosk this weekend in order to satisfy a requirement for becoming an Eagle Scout.

Time is of the essence, he told council, since the requirement must be satisfied before his eighteenth birthday, which is Sept. 30.

Volunteers and fellow scouts will assist Behe with building the kiosk, which will be similar in appearance to one that was installed along the Saucon Rail Trail at Water Street Park last year.

Behe said the kiosk will display a map and other useful information about the area.

The structure is expected to cost about $580 to build, but many of the materials needed will be donated or provided at a reduced cost, he told council.

For example, Lowe's of Easton has agreed to give him a 50 percent discount on some of the supplies he'll need.

“Over the course of the week I will continue to seek donations from various local hardware stores and several other Lowe’s and Home Depots,” Behe said.

Council members voted their support for the project, but stipulated that Behe meet with Public Works Director Tom Henshaw in order to ensure that the kiosk is constructed in an appropriate location.
