Pool Splash Pad Will Feature LED Lighting

Officials hope the new play area for young children will be installed and operational by June.

A new splash pad at the Hellertown Pool will include LED lighting, making it available for nighttime use, Borough Council members decided at their last meeting.

Borough Engineer Bryan Smith told council members the children's play area will measure 30 by 40 feet, include eight individual jets and will be located "right off the existing pool deck" in between the bathhouse and the swimming pool.

Each jet will create a spray area meauring eight feet in diameter and could be lit by LED bulbs for nighttime use at little additional expense, he said.

The splash pad will be "supplied by its own [filtration] system which will be separate from the pool," Smith added. "That way we can regulate the chlorine levels and operate it separately at any point."

The play area, Public Works Director Tom Henshaw explained, will require extra chlorination, which he said is one of the reasons why the filtration system will be separate.

Smith recommended that the public works department install the splash pad equipment, which officials hope to have ready for use by the opening of the pool in June.

Although the installation work will be handled in-house, "there is going to be some engineering work required," former Borough Manager Charlie Luthar noted.

A motion by council member Gail Nolf to proceed with the purchase of a splash pad equipped with LED lighting was approved unanimously at the Feb. 7 meeting.
