Pa. House Passes Bill to Strengthen Retail Theft Penalties

The theft of an item valued at $1,000 or more would become a third-degree felony if House Bill 1000 ultimately becomes law in Pennsylvania.

Penalties for individuals convicted of stealing items valued at $1,000 or more will increase if a bill recently passed by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives ultimately becomes law.

announced the passage of House Bill 1000 on Dec. 30, stating in a weekly e-newsletter that the measure is "aimed at deterring organized retail theft from occurring in Pennsylvania." 

"House Bill 1000 would make the penalty for stealing items valued at $1,000 or more a third-degree felony," Simmons' office said. "Current law grades the offense as a misdemeanor."

The theft of an item valued at $1,000 or more is already a felony in a number of nearby states, including Maryland, New York, New Jersey and Ohio. 

House Bill 1000 now moves to the state Senate for consideration, according to Simmons' office.
