Median Could Divide Part of Rt. 412 in Hellertown

Hellertown Borough Council frowned on the proposal to install a concrete barrier in the center of Route 412 north of Kiernan Avenue.

At borough council's last meeting, Hellertown Borough Engineer Bryan Smith, of Barry Isett and Associates, told council members that PennDOT plans to install a solid concrete median as a divider on Route 412 (Main Street) north of Kiernan Avenue.

The median would be "a solid barrier down the middle," he said.

The news came as part of an update about the ongoing Route 412 widening project, which is underway in both Hellertown and Bethlehem.

Smith said the median would prevent traffic exiting from properties on the west side of Route 412 from turning left (north).

Council frowned upon the news, and councilman Tom Rieger made a motion not to sign off on a PennDOT document that would have paved the way for the median's installation.

The motion was unanimously approved by council.
