Local Company Submits Slag Removal Proposal

A local company has submitted a proposal for , Hellertown Borough Council solicitor Michael Corriere told council July 2.

Corriere said Material Recovery LLC of Lower Saucon Township has submitted a $9,000 proposal to relocate a number of large slag mounds near the Saucon Creek--remnants of an earlier industrial era in the borough.

He explained that the slag has hindered the disbursement of water following heavy rains, exacerbating flooding along .

The slag would be "relocated so the flood plain would be provided for in a more appropriate fashion," Corriere said.

The company has offered to grind up the slag and remove much of it from the site, for use as it "sees fit," he explained.

Some material would be relocated on-site at the discretion of borough officials.

Corriere noted that council could accept Material Recovery's proposal without advertising for other bids, since it is below the $18,500 threshold above which municipalities must advertise for bids.

"The contract as written in my opinion doesn't need to be bid," he said.

Council took no action on the contract July 2, but a vote on it could be undertaken at council's next meeting, which will be held Monday, July 16 at 7pm in .
