Hellertown May Revive Junior Councilperson Program

The borough's junior councilperson program has been dormant for several years.

Hellertown Borough Council members recently discussed reviving a program that affords local high school students the opportunity to observe and learn about local government as non-voting council members.

The borough's junior councilperson program has been dormant for several years, and a couple of council members said they think that's because of a lack of interest.

Mayor Richard Fluck, however, said the program is important enough that its revival should be pursued.

Councilman Tom Rieger said that if possible a Saucon Valley High School sophomore or junior should perhaps be considered for appointment, since a younger student will have the opportunity to serve on council for a longer period.

Council members ultimately asked borough manager Cathy Hartranft to begin work on recruiting potential candidates for the program.

Lower Saucon Township Council has a similar program in place, and recently advertised for junior council member applicants.
