Feral Cat Program is Succeeding, Manager Says

Hellertown Borough Manager Cathy Kichline said recently that a trap-neuter-release initiative implemented to help control the borough's feral cat population is working well.

A program that is meant to help control feral cat colonies in Hellertown is "moving along splendidly," Borough Manager Cathy Kichline reported earlier this month.

Kichline said she had received an update from No Nonsense Neutering President Martha Kahan, with whom the borough has partnered on the introduction of the "Trap-Neuter-Release" program for strays.

"Three pregnant females were trapped and spayed just this week," Kichline wrote in an April 9 email.

She added that No Nonsense Neutering is currently "working with the (feral cat) feeders at 950 Front Street and the (Hellertown) Democratic Club," which is at the western end of Thomas Avenue.

Meanwhile, flyers about the program are being distributed in other areas of town, Kichline said.

Residents who live near cat colonies are eligible to receive free, effective cat deterrents for use in their yards, Kahan said at an informational meeting about the TNR program held in February.

No Nonsense Neutering has reduced the feral cat population in eastern Pennsylvania by neutering approximately 20,000 felines over the last five years, according to Kahan.
