Demonstrators Crash Romney Appearance

Former Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell and Democratic supporters staged a counter-protest at a Bucks County Wawa where Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was supposed to have appeared Saturday.

Update 6:30pm. ABC News reports that Romney greeted about 50 people at the other Wawa, including a little league baseball team.

"We knew yesterday what they were going to pull," an unnamed Romney campaign aide told ABC.

Update 1:55pm: Citing security concerns, Romney instead made a brief appearance before some members of the media at a different Wawa location on Route 309 in upper Bucks County.

Democratic protestors on Saturday threatened to disrupt in Milford Township, near Quakertown.

Between 150 and 250 anti-Romney protestors had gathered at the Wawa and in the immediate area, appearing to substantially outnumber Romney supporters shortly after noon. More Romney supporters were arriving as the candidate's appearance drew closer.

Romney was scheduled to arrive at the Wawa at 12:40pm.

Eyewitnesses said at least some of the anti-Romney demonstrators, led by former Governor Ed Rendell, had arrived on a bus.

A large cluster of demonstrators, bearing signs and placards and shouting "hey, ho, Mitt Romney's got to go" thronged the Wawa parking area.

Rendell himself and a second contingent of several dozen people were visible in a gravel lot some distance from the Wawa. Rendell addressed that group from a lectern for several minutes. They then walked down the road to join the group near the Wawa.

Fragments of each group confronted each other.

"We are the 99 percent," shouted the anti-Romney protesters.

"USA, USA, we're the 100 percent," replied Romney's supporters.
