Council: New Splash Pad Won't Open This Year

At Borough Council's Monday night meeting, Public Works Director Tom Henshaw recommended against attempting to install the recreational area before the Hellertown Pool opens for the summer.

It's a sad time for water babies in the Saucon Valley area.

That's because Hellertown Public Works Director Tom Henshaw recommended Monday that the installation of a "splash pad" area at the Hellertown Pool be postponed until fall.

Henshaw reluctantly told Borough Council that the construction of the recreational fountain area for young children could "totally destroy" part of the lawn around the pool, leaving no time for it to grow back before the summer swim season begins.

"Mud and pools don't get along too well," Henshaw told council members. "I don't think it's a good idea to start (the project) until after we close (for the summer)."

Henshaw explained that if he and public works employees would attempt to install the splash pad this spring, "you'd have an entire fenced off area where nobody could walk, nobody could sit, and it's the busiest area (next to the pool)."

He added that he was personally disappointed to have to recommend postponing the installation.

"Actually, I was hoping to be able to do it," he said.

Henshaw said he has not yet received a list of the equipment that will be needed for the splash pad, and said that once he does, the package will go out to bid.

Council members accepted Henshaw's recommendation, and agreed that the installation of the splash pad should be postponed until after the pool closes for the summer.
