Borough Switching to 'Single-Stream Recycling'

Hellertown Borough Manager Cathy Kichline announced the change at Monday's borough council meeting.

Hellertown Borough Manager Cathy Kichline announced at Monday night's borough council meeting that recycling in the borough will soon follow the "single-stream" model, whereby different types of recyclables can be co-mingled in the same container.

Cardboard placed at the curb "will still need to be bundled properly," Kichline said.

She told council that a brochure about the changeover will be mailed to residents next week.

Typically, single-stream recycling programs result in greater participation, because it's an easier system, she noted.

The borough won't be providing residents with new containers, but 500 stickers will be available to place on containers that residents already own or may want to purchase, Kichline said.
