Borough Resident Tells Council How Pool Was Fixed

Delfoe, a retired electrician, helped assess the damage to the Hellertown Pool's pump after it was struck by lightning earlier this month.

When , a team effort helped reopen the popular aquatic facility after just one day, resident Joe Delfoe told Borough Council July 5.

Delfoe, a retired electrician, said he received a phone call from Director of Public Works Tom Henshaw early on the morning that the problem was discovered late last month.

He hurried to the pool to help assess the situation and along with another electrician subsequently placed an order for a new pump.

One of the pumps was scheduled to arrive in two days and another was due in three days, but in the meantime it appeared that the pool would have to be closed.

"We didn't have a spare," Delfoe explained. "This was the problem."

Fortunately, a new pump arrived sooner than anticipated, and employees from the public works department installed it and were able to reopen the pool soon afterward, he said.

"Your people did an excellent job," Delfoe told council.

He also recommended that council consider setting aside money for the purchase of a new impeller to improve circulation, along with money for a spare impeller.

He added that he would forward information about the parts to Henshaw, who was absent from the meeting.

Council Vice President John Bate asked Delfoe if a lightning rod should be placed on top of the unit, but Delfoe recommended against it.

"That's the first time that's happened in all these years," he said of the apparent lightning strike that caused the motor to run until it self-combusted.

"I think you're in pretty good shape electrically up there now," he concluded.

Council members thanked Delfoe for volunteering his time and expertise to help Henshaw and the public works department.
