In anticipation of a major winter storm that is forecast to affect the area, the Borough of Hellertown issued an announcement Thursday that includes tips from the public works department for clearing snow from driveways.

"Snow should be plowed or shoveled to the right side of the driveway as you are facing the intersecting roadway," the announcement said. "By being plowed away from the direction of oncoming snowplows, this action will prevent the bulk of the snow from being pushed back into the driveway."

Other recommendations for clearing snow from driveways include the following:

· Eliminate snow piles at the driveway entrance, whenever possible. High accumulations of snow will obstruct the vision of motorists when exiting from the driveway and hinder the ability of oncoming motorists to see you pulling out of the driveway, creating another potential for accidents.

· Do not push snow out onto roads at any time. This creates hazardous driving conditions for all vehicles.

The borough also reminded residents to clear snow from around fire hydrants that abut their properties and to clear snow and ice from sidewalks within 24 hours of the end of a storm.

Residents are also encouraged to offer assistance to neighbors who may not be able to clear their own sidewalks.

A snow emergency will be in effect in the borough of Hellertown beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday, until further notice.
