Township Police Warn of Possible Scam

Lower Saucon police said Monday that a chimney cleaning service reportedly operating in the area could be a scam in disguise.

issued a warning Monday night about a possible scam being perpetrated in the area.

Police said they received a report Monday afternoon about "a possible scam involving Hispanic males who claim to be part of a chimney cleaning service by the name of Pro Energy Maintenance."

Police didn't specify what type of behavior led them to conclude that the men could be scam artists, but said "they are driving around in an old white work truck bearing (the) New York registration 28668MB."

A Google search for "Pro Energy Maintenance" led to a listing for a company with that name based in Copiague, New York.

According to the listing on BuildZoom.com--which compiles data about contractors from throughout the U.S.--the company has an active license that was issued on June 14, 2011 and specializes in "brick work, concrete work, all repair and re-builting (sic) of chimneys, roofs, gutters and much more."

The listing on BuildZoom.com was last verified in January 2010, however a number of customer reviews have been posted to it since that time.

The most recent review, by an individual with the screen name "Karen44," was recorded on Dec. 5, 2011 and states the following:

"Pro Energy came out to my house to clean my chimney. When they were finished they told me I needed a new liner. They told me that it usually cost $1,500.00, but if I had it done right away (the next day), they would do it for $1,200.00. I told them no thanks, I would get other estimates. I did get the estimates, and was told by two other heating contractors I did not need a new liner. This company preys on people they think they can take advantage of. I can only imagine how many people fall for their scams and let them do the 'work they don't even need. Shame on you."

Other reviews posted to the listing within the last year warn consumers to "beware" of Pro Energy Maintenance and accuse the company of scamming or attempting to scam elderly homeowners in Pennsylvania.

Lower Saucon police advised anyone who feels uncomfortable after being approached by Pro Energy Maintenance, or who believes someone is attempting to perpetrate a scam upon them, to contact local law enforcement authorities.
