Report: Armed Robbery at Top Star

Second Armed Robbery in Town in a Month

Police are investigating an armed robbery at in Hellertown, according to a report by WFMZ-TV at about 10:20 p.m. The TV station reported that two men armed with a gun and a baseball bat committed the crime.

However, store employees were mum on the incident late Friday evening, refusing to speak about what had apparently just happened.

At approximately 10:45pm, the exterior lights at the normally busy 24-hour convenience store and gas station were darkened.

An unoccupied Hellertown police cruiser was parked in front of the entrance to the store, its motor running.

Three Top Star employees were visible inside the locked store, but when asked through the glass door and windows if a robbery had just occurred remained silent.

One female employee was observed checking a credit card transactor device next to a cash register, while a male employee appeared to be making notes.

It was unclear whether police officers remained at the scene, but no officers were observed outside the darkened building.

The Top Star Exxon is located at 1570 Main Street, just a few hundred feet from the eastbound entrance ramp to Interstate 78.

This is not the first time this year the gas station has been robbed.

In July, published reports indicate the Top Star Express was held up at gunpoint by a masked man who fled with an undetermined amount of cash.

More recently, Hellertown's McDonald's restaurant was in mid-November.

Police have not identified any suspects in the McDonald's robbery, which occurred at around 4am Nov. 14.
