What's being a volunteer firefighter like?
“It’s not like anything else! It’s nice knowing that you can make a difference in someone’s life. Human life is pretty valuable. You don’t really realize how valuable it is.”
How do your loved ones feel about you putting your life in danger?
“Probably the same as everybody else’s. They worry about us but they’re proud of us. They’re proud of what we do. Somebody has to do it.”
Tell us a story you'll never forget about your firefighting experience.
“I was on my first motor vehicle accident scene a year ago. It got cut off by a tractor-trailer, went off the guardrails and into a ditch. We had three of our rescue companies working as a team. Seeing that, working as a team and family, was just kind of...wow. It’s a brotherhood.”
What would you tell people interested in joining your fire company?
“Once you join this fire company, everybody gets to know you. You always have that awkward moment when you’re first in. You don’t know what to do but give it a couple of weeks. Everybody warms up to you as you warm up to them. We all have each other’s backs. You don’t have to worry about anything.”
