Police: Man Killed Dog With Pellet Gun

Lower Saucon Township Police say Arthur Santos Melo violated the township's firearms ordinance when he shot a dog with a .177 caliber pellet rifle.

A Lower Saucon Township man was cited for a township firearms ordinance violation after he allegedly shot a dog with a .177 caliber pellet rifle June 27, police said in a press release Thursday.

According to police, Arthur Santos Melo, of the 2100 block of Saucon Avenue, shot the dog because it was "attacking his rabbits and chickens."

Police said Melo was in violation of the ordinance because the shooting occurred within 150 yards of several occupied residences.

"This violation resulted in the death of (the) dog," police noted.

I have had 3 flocks of chickens wiped out by my neighbor's dogs. Too bad he couldn't have put the pellet into the neighbor who did not take care of their animals.

Agreed! The first violation is that the gun owner used the gun on the dog- the dog was just being a dog. The neighbor is at fault.. Heck he could have even called animal control first before using the gun.

what I'm surprised at is that they allow livestock in Steelcity. Its not like the dog had to travel, poor thing probably just wandered a yard or two over...

I've had chickens and rabbits - they didn't have names, they were just livestock - worth the price of the meat. A dog is a whole differant animal - it's a part of the family, it has a name and a place in people's hearts. How cruel and heartless can a person be to slaughter a dog in order to save maybe $10 to $20 worth of meat?

The owner of the dog should be fined also for not keeping him under control. it's their fault this happened. the guy who killed him used very poor judgement.
