Marijuana, Scale Recovered at SVHS, Police Say

Lower Saucon Township Police say a 17-year-old male from the township was arrested at the school Jan. 30.

A 17-year-old boy from Lower Saucon Township was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana/tobacco on school property, after township police say they were called to Saucon Valley High School the morning of Jan. 30 "for some items that the school wanted to turn over to police."

In a news release about the alleged incident, police said the items included "a scale, a small amount of marijuana and various tobacco products."

Police said that after the teen was taken into custody and processed, he was released to a parent.

Ihope Saucon High will take action before the elementary kids are exposed to this very illegal and dangerous situation. Parent of an elementary child. Vida Frankenfield

While this kid was obviously an idiot for bringing pot to school, I still can't justify ruining his life and giving him a criminal record for simple possession of marijuana. Because he is seventeen, he will likely be charged as an adult, and will have trouble getting financial aid for college, finding a job, and have a host of other problems that come with having a criminal record. Pot is only dangerous because it is illegal, and therefore I'd be hesitant to call this a "dangerous situation." There have been no recorded cases of poisoning from marijuana. It's not a physically addictive substance (like nicotine or caffeine, for example). Should this guy get in trouble for bringing it to school? Absolutely. Smoking anything is bad for you, and if it's against school policy, then so be it. Giving him a criminal record, however, is pushing it much too far.
