A Hellertown man accused of firing a gun near his girlfriend's head in November had the most serious charges against him—including aggravated assault and simple assault—dismissed, after evidence indicated that his girlfriend may have fired the gun herself while she was intoxicated, the Express-Times reported.

The newspaper report indicated that Dennis Wiedmann, 55, of the 1600 block of Bleyler Street, had his bail reduced to unsecured bail by District Judge David Tidd, but must surrender all the firearms registered in his name as a condition of his bail until his case is resolved.

Police originally reported last month that Wiedmann had pulled out a .44 caliber handgun and fired it near his girlfriend's head after the two argued at his home.

Authorities said the woman temporarily lost hearing due to the incident.

Wiedmann—who is still facing charges of DUI and reckless endangerment—was found intoxicated in his SUV when officers arrived at his home, police said at the time.
