Lower Saucon Township Police said Thursday that a man and woman—both described as white—have been attempting to sell books door-to-door in the township without a permit, which is required by ordinance.

Police said the couple are claiming to be Penn State students, and that they've given various reasons why they're selling the books.

In a separate alert issued by the township Thursday, one of the reasons that has been given was said to be that their "father won't pay for anything."

The alert also indicated that a resident confirmed he had purchased books from the couple last year, "but they never arrived."

The couple knocked on doors on Velvet Trail, Bingen Road and Noah Circle on Wednesday, police said, and were observed driving a blue minivan with an Arizona license plate.

"All citizens are urged to decline any offers from such individuals," police said in their press release.

The township's alert also stated that "residents should be cautious of soliciting scams and ask any solicitor to view their township issued permit."

"Residents are encouraged to immediately report any suspicious activity to the LSTPD by utilizing the non-emergency number, which is 610-759-2200," it added.

Lower Saucon Township Council is currently in the midst of deciding whether or not to tighten the township's soliciting and peddling ordinance, based upon a recommendation from the police department.
