Hellertown Police Issue Warning About Property, Lottery Scams

The Hellertown Police Department is advising residents to beware of online property and lottery scams.

Note: The following press release is from the Hellertown Police Department.

Hellertown Police have issued a warning to residents to beware of scams and fraudulent postings through online websites such as Craigslist for individuals listing properties for sale or rent within the borough.

If you are seeking to purchase or rent a property, it is strongly advised to either utilize a licensed realtor or to meet with the seller in person and verify their legal ownership through county records before any money is transferred.

Consumers should always be more cautious with any Internet sales, being sure to verify a company's existence before purchasing goods and services.

A note on being contacted notifying of winning or receiving money: You will never be required to send money to receive winnings. This is a common scam method. As far as lotteries, the only legitimate lotteries are state-run lotteries and claims of international, U.S. or various country lotteries are fraudulent. If you don't remember entering a sweepstakes or lottery, then it is most likely a scam. If you are suspicious of any or similar circumstances to those mentioned, feel free to speak with a Hellertown police officer by calling 610-759-2200.

The Hellertown Police Department wishes everyone a safe and happy holiday season.
