Hellertown Officer Struck by Drunk Driver, Police Say

Hellertown Police say an officer was operating his patrol car on Ackerman Street on Sept. 8 when he was struck by Christian Diaz, 27, of 819 Evans St., Bethlehem. Diaz was under the influence of alcohol at the time, according to police.

A Hellertown police officer was operating his patrol car when he was struck by a drunk driver Sept. 8, police said in a press release Wednesday.

According to police, the officer was driving on Ackerman Street at 10:43am when he was struck by Christian Diaz, 27, of 819 Evans St., Bethlehem.

"During the accident investigation, it was discovered that (Diaz) failed to drive his vehicle on the right side of the roadway and was found to be under the influence of alcohol," police said.

Diaz's blood alcohol content (BAC) was determined to be .13 percent, they added.

The legal BAC limit for most motorists in Pennsylvania is .08 percent.

Police said Diaz has been charged with DUI, careless driving, driving on the right side of the roadway and "registration card to be signed and exhibited on demand."
