Gas Line Strike Shuts Down Part of Hellertown's Main Street

The gas line strike, which occurred at midday in the first block of Main Street, occurred when a UGI backhoe operator scratched the protective coating on a pipe.

A section of Main Street in Hellertown was shut down due to a gas line strike Thursday afternoon.

The line strike, which occurred in the first block of Main Street at the south end of town, closed the busy road between Polk Valley Road and Walnut Street.

The Express-Times reported that northbound car traffic from Route 412 was being detoured onto Meadows Road.

Truck traffic, however, cannot travel that route due to a weight restriction on the Meadows Road bridge.

Meadows Road between Route 412 and the bridge is expected to be closed for approximately two weeks starting Monday so Lower Saucon Township Public Works employees can complete an emergency streambank stabilization project, the township announced Wednesday.

The Express-Times reported that a UGI backhoe operator was operating the equipment near 42 Main St. when the protective coating of a pipe was scratched, although no gas was released as a result of Thursday's accident.
