Alleged Counterfeiter Targeted Snack Stand, Chief Says

Hellertown Police Chief Robert Shupp told Borough Council Monday that a man suspected of passing counterfeit currency was recently arrested in the borough.

A man who allegedly passed counterfeit $20 bills at a borough Little League snack stand was recently apprehended by Police Officer Carl Fischer, Chief Robert Shupp told Hellertown Borough Council members Monday night.

"He did a real good job," Shupp said of Fischer's police work.

Shupp said the fake notes were being circulated for some time before the Bethlehem man was finally apprehended.

Typically, a fake $20 was used to purchase a small item, resulting in a loss of more than $18, he said.

Smaller denomination counterfeit bills are easier to pass, because they're generally less frequently checked than $50 or $100 bills, he added.

Since counterfeiting is a federal offense, the case has been handed over to the U.S. Secret Service for prosecution, Shupp said after the meeting.
