Men's Swimwear: From Waterproof to Worry-Proof

This time of the year is a great time to find deals on swimwear and other summer fashion.

If you work a 9 to 5 in corporate America like I do, you know that leisure time by the pool and vacation getaways are likely to be far and few in between--unless you work at Google where a swim-up bar is part of your daily 15. But as you make headway towards that PTO you’ve blocked off for your summer vacation, you’re going to want to be ready to hit the sand in style.

It’s time to toss those torn trunks and opt for a look that makes you appear fully aware of what year it is. You’ll thank me later. But before you get your tighty-whities in a bunch, know that it’s not necessary to spend a fortune to look dapper in swimwear. In fact, by following a few simple style rules, you’ll have Beach Barbie on the lifeguard stand signaling you to shore in no time.

If you’re a last minute shopper like me, you’ll probably notice a barren selection of swimsuits in most stores now, as they’re already making way for fall collections. Most retailers, as we know, tend to have 'Christmas in July' syndrome, and attract customers early at full price. But before you throw your hands in the air, take a sneak peak in the sale section for markdowns. Department stores like Macy’s at the Lehigh Valley Mall are famous for their ongoing summer sales, and men’s swimwear is often available at a deep discount by late July. You can purchase brand names like Lacoste, Nautica, Puma, Nike, Perry Ellis, Tommy Bahama, Hurley and Polo Ralph Lauren without breaking the bank. In fact, July is a great time to buy both online and in stores, as almost all summer gear takes a price plunge. You’ll even find sale swimwear directly from designer sites, like tommyhilfiger.com, which tend to have better in-stock options as far as color and size.

Instead of choosing a solid color swimsuit, be bold and try different prints, plaids and embroidered designs for an updated, more eye-catching look. Name brand decals that wrap around the leg can help create an elongated, slenderized look.

Take your summer skivvies to the next level by accessorizing with Ray-Bans, Aviator lenses or a style-savvy straw fedora to complete your ensemble. If you’re rocking a sportier look with your swim trunks, consider a waterproof or water-resistant watch from Murphy Jewelers, L.L. Bean or Banana Republic, all located at the Promenade Shops in Saucon Valley. For boho-beach goers, leather bound cuffs and hemp strand bracelets are perfect finishing touches which will pull the whole look together. But whether you’re going sporty, preppy, euro-trash or alternative, please leave the shark tooth and puka-shell necklaces where they belong…buried underground with your baseball card collection.

Don’t become another victim for Beach Barbie to save from drowning in a fashion emergency. If anything, man up and fake a jellyfish sting in your signature, summer-ready style!
