My Trip from Couch to Tough Mudder: Week 2

Cardio and biking and diets, oh my!

Despite being cleared on Tuesday to start running again, I focused this week on low-impact cardio exercises. The weather over the weekend was just too nice not to go for a bike ride, and the weather the rest of the week was wreaking havoc on my poor knees. I can't wait until I start physical therapy, as it should clear a lot of these issues up. Here's what my week looked like:

  • Day 1: Thirty minutes on the elliptical at the gym. Also tossed in a few reps on the weight lifting machines. I almost fell off my seat when I saw some guns popping out of my arms!
  • Day 2: Pitifully short bike ride on the . My quads were killing me and then my bike chain fell off. Went to who kindly fixed it for me, and then readjusted my seat and handlebar height after I was complaining wildly about my poor quads. Apparently it should not hurt that badly. (I seem to keep repeating this statement, hrmm.)
  • Day 3: Back on the bike! This time I brought a friend. Between her pushing me and the adjustments to my bike, I was able to go 7 miles! That's more than twice what I was doing before.
  • Day 4: Working out at home, I did the Slim in 6 workout (why do my arms keep burning when I do this, arggh!).
  • Day 5: Fit Club at the . We did Brazil Butt Lift. The lambada works your bum like nothing else.
  • Day 6: Off day.
  • Day 7: Got my set of Hip Hop Abs in the mail so of course I had to do that :) Those workouts are so much fun you can barely tell it's exercise (until the next day, of course!).

After loading up on all sorts of healthy goodness at the grocery store last week I spent a lot of time focusing on eating better. Now that I'm working my body extra hard I need to give it the right fuel, plus I'll bum myself out if I work out this much and don't lose any weight (that's pretty common). I upped my fruit and vegetable intake, cut down portion sizes, and even switched to drinking red wine instead of hard liquor when going out (I think the crew at were pretty shocked at that one). My two biggest hurdles are eating too many carbs and too little protein, but I'll keep at it. On a side note, I am down 4 pounds since I started this two weeks ago. Not too shabby, eh?

As always, a big thank you to all of you who have given me the support and advice I need to keep going. To all of you reading this, I hope these posts are giving you the motivation to get moving. Believe it or not, once you make the decision everything falls into place and it gets easier every day. See you all next week!
