Landfill Rezoning, Library Funding on L. Saucon Council Agenda

When Lower Saucon Township Council meets Wednesday at 7 p.m., two contentious issues that have divided residents in the recent past will be on their meeting agenda.

According to a revised copy of the agenda posted on the township's website, council is scheduled to discuss the possible rezoning of land along Applebutter Road.

Rezoning that land could allow for an expansion of IESI Bethlehem Landfill.

The landfill first proposed an expansion that would extend its lifespan early last year.

Also on the agenda will be a discussion about funding for the Bethlehem Area Public Library.

The library's board of trustees recently rejected a request by council to allow the township to split its funding between the BAPL and the Hellertown Area Library, which a study revealed many township residents use.

As a member municipality, the township currently contributes more than $180,000 to the BAPL annual budget.

The annual contract, which has been in place for more than 40 years, is typically renewed in the fall.
