Improve your Wealth, Focus on Preventative Wellness

Road to Health, Wealth & Happiness

The old cliché “Health is wealth” has never been truer than today, at a time when healthcare costs are skyrocketing.  I find myself asking the question “what life style changes must I make to improve my wellness quality and minimize medical costs?”;  I am not alone in this self examination as most families are asking themselves this same question hoping to make their finances stretch further during present turbulent times.

In our recent history, we have seen American pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly and Company plead guilty to and agree to pay $1.415 Billion in fines for promoting its drug Zyprexa for uses not approved by the FDA; Abbott Laboratories plead guilty and agree to pay $1.6 billion to resolve its criminal and civil liability arising from the company's unlawful promotion of the prescription drug Depakote; the British drug maker GlaxoSmithKline agree to plead guilty to criminal charges and pay $3 billion in fines for promoting its best-selling antidepressants for unapproved uses and failing to report safety data about a top diabetes drug on Monday, July 2nd 2012. Knowing this and doing nothing would be a shame, in my mind. So, I approached a fellow small business owner and wellness focused Chiropractor, Dr. Jeff Moore, to seek guidance.

You may wonder, “Why go to a Chiropractor to seek health care answers?”….  I wanted to have an informed discussion with a medical professional who understood the challenges we face in our local community and cared to make a difference in helping others.  Dr. Jeff Moore’s mission is wellness without the use of drugs or surgery and he is known as a caring member of our community focused on addressing the root cause of health issues while continuing his partnership with the Crystal Lake Food Pantry.  I walked away learning quite a bit about the importance of addressing wellness root cause and a growing appreciation for his preventative wellness approach.  I sought feedback from those who have benefitted from Dr. Jeff Moore’s wellness mission to validate what I learned and wanted to share at least one of them with you. “After seeing Dr. Jeff Moore 3 or 4 times, besides my back feeling much better I noticed I was sleeping thru the night much better”, said Mike LaComb, who needs to be in good physical health to run his small business.

To learn more about the various preventative health and wellness information I learned, explore the following links. Remember, for the bottom line of both our small business and family finances!

  • Healthy families spend less of their money on treating illnesses or symptoms. That money saved helps families maintain financial stability. Stable families with healthy lifestyles promote an economically stable community. Small businesses in stable communities grow vibrantly well, creating educational and employment opportunities. Vibrant communities bring the families and small business together for shared progress.  Crystal Lake and surrounding communities are ready for working towards that vibrant growth. Let us start with our own wellness first!

**Do share your thoughts and insights on how we can benefit from preventative wellness. We need to make our finances stretch for our families and improve our small business bottom line understanding the interconnectedness. I look forward to an engaging discussion! **

You are doing great job writing about Prevention. 1) Benjamin Franklin said it well-"An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of Cure". Look at Cancer--" Prevention & Early detection is far cheaper than Treatment or Cure" as Benjamin Franklin told us. But Colon Cancer screening in Illinois is 15% less than Michigan. With 55% colon Cancer screening, more people die from Colon Cancer--5-14 per day--3200 per year. We hear about car accidents--but not about Colon Cancer deaths in our area. Somehow Prevention effort for Colon Cancer are not as effective as are with Breast Cancer. We are now offering lower prices to encourage more Colon Cancer screening. I am a Volunteer doctor for GET YOUR REAR IN GEAR.--which carries stories of 30 year old,40 year old dying from this cancer. Disney has agreed to sell better foods to lower children Obesity/excessive weight. Mayor Bloomberg has proposed taxing sugary drinks in New York City. Our job is to keep informing people.

Weight. It's the number-one health challenge in America. In the last 30 years, we've gone from one of the healthiest countries in the world to one of the least healthy. 70% of Americans are overweight and 40% are obese! This in itself leads to numerous health consequences and a diminished quality of life. Our domestic obesity crisis continues to worsen with each passing year. Education and plans of action to properly address obesity is absolutely necessary.

The truth is that it is hard to make a change in wellness without having a plan. Even if you have the plan you have to work the plan. Even if you start to work the plan you must keep working the plan. Bottom line; we need to not only be educated but also empowered to change. Then, we need to have that modivation to endure and continue to help us follow through. Working with professionals like Dr. Moore can help you draft the plan, work the plan, and hold you accountable to the plan. Good Luck.

It is interesting that you talk about planning, Tim! Just like all other aspects of our life, planning is critical in the area of wellness too. Wellness worksheets (http://www.mhhe.com/socscience/hhp/wellness/#1) allow us to pro-actively plan today to avoid challenges when we can least afford it or expect it.

We need 'prosperity consciousness' and 'health consciousness' gives us a better chance at a healthy bank account and a healthy body.
