Who is a Chiropractor?

Healthy You!

As a Doctor of Chiropractic, many of my business associates and friends ask me what I do and I am quite frankly astounded, No one asks what an allopathic physician does. We all a know that they help to heal the body with drugs and surgery. As a chiropractor, I attempt the same thing, except that I help the body heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. I cannot speak for other types of health care providers, but as a chiropractor, my philosophy is to give the body a jump start with a adjustment to the spine which in a way jogs the nervous system out of its day dream and let it know that it can start the healing process. It is my opinion however, that if a drug helps, it does so because it has removed a road block to the innate healing. My point being, that it is the body that does the healing and not the drug.

I work with the electrical energy that starts in the brain and works it way through the spinal cord and out the vertebral column to the muscles and organs our body. If we have a neck or back ache or shoulder or knee ache or a stomach ache, it is all the same to the spine. I mean, that it is an interference to the normal flow of energy from the spinal column. I may help your back or your stomach, but the cause comes from the spine and that is where I concentrate my labors. I am the first to admit that there are many other things that will contribute to a spinal subluxation, such as mental states (stress, worry, etc), physical injury, dietary
to mention a few and those also have to be addressed for the nervous system to maintain your health. I will address these things and any questions or comments you may have in next blog.

Dr. Jeff, this is a good introduction to how a Chiropractic Doctor can help people with preventative wellness and health care. Some may not know that their health insurance covers this service while others may have various questions. What do you think is holding back folks from fully embracing the preventative lifestyle solution when it is clear that prevention is far more cost effective financially and easier on the human body?

Can your Chiropractic work serve as a permanent solution or will continual "touch ups" be required to maintain better health? Let's say I have a bad back (I do) and you perform a work plan on it to make it better. Will I need to basically come back once every month to keep everything in line or does my body have a memory to keep things in place once they are there?

In answer to your question, the answer is yes to monthly or intermittent check up's. It can take up to 6 weeks or longer for connective tissue (connective tissue holds bones and muscles together) to heal. I suggest monthly check ups much like reviewing your check book balance and ensure you have not overdrawn your account. What I have found in my own practice is that chiropractic is many times all the help the body needs to heal itself, but sometimes it's necessary to 'borrow funds' from another type of lending institution (ie, health professional). I think that to be healthy requires effort and some of us are either lazy or we have not made it a priority. Poor health, poor businesses models have to be painful enough to spur us to action and when they are, we act. I know several people who had to have a heart attack before they took notice of the quality of their life. We are also educated by TV, movies, and commercials to act when we have to and cover up the dis-ease with a drug. What is more romantic a heroic save with open heart surgery or a chiropractic adjustment to maintain and promote wellness? Chiropractic has helped many people and promoted wellness health for generations (chiropractic was founded in 1895). In summary, prevention takes effort and we must make the decision to make health, abundant health a priority.

I like your philosophy that the body heals itself and you are working without drugs and surgery to get a patients body to do what it needs to heal itself. Looking forward to your next post.

Thanks for your reply Sam. One of the way that the body can be assisted in self healing, is the mental process. A positive attitude can greatly accelerate healing especially if we do not wait beyond the physical limits of the body. A negative, heavy attitude can have a deleterious effect on our health. Don't be happy that you were fortunate to live through the night, rather be pleased that you can choose to wake up with a great expectation for a great day. Zig Ziglar (as did Earl Nightengale) called 'stinking thinking' a malady that will make you sick. It is sometimes very difficult to be positive, but for myself, I see no other healthy choice.
