Fitness Success Involves More Than Exercise and Diet

In "Push: 30 Days to Turbocharged Habits" author and fitness guru Chalene Johnson explains how defining a definite major purpose is the first step to a better way of life.

I just completed reading "Push: 30 Days to Turbocharged Habits, A Bangin’ Body, and the Life You Deserve" (2011). The author, Chalene Johnson, is the founder and president of Powder Blue Productions and a celebrity trainer with Beachbody. She has produced exercise programs such as Turbo Fire, Turbo Jam and Chalean Extreme. Her motivation for writing the book was to convey to her reader the research she has done and compiled from over 20 years concerning successful and fit people.

She begins by advising the reader not to skip straight to the exercise and diet chapters. Why is this? Johnson says she has noticed through her training and business career that successful and fit people are that way because they do the work on the inside first. Therefore, work on yourself first. Then the pounds go, the muscle comes, and the dollars follow.

How can one begin to work on oneself? According to Ms. Johnson, that starts with defining a definite major purpose. This purpose is not just a goal--it is an all-consuming passion. You wake up with it, drive in the car to it, associate with other people to help strengthen it, and look for models that will lead you to this goal.

Once the goal is set, action must take place: working on yourself, your network, business/life plan, and detailing your progress. This may begin with instructional audio, searching for a therapist to overcome obstacles, looking for new exercise activities, or reviewing current models for what you want to accomplish.

Chalene reiterates that in the current age in which we live it is almost impossible not to realize your aspirations. The ability to obtain information and put that to use is at everybody’s fingertips. The tough part is realizing your own strengths versus areas where others' strengths and knowledge may be an asset, and that they ultimately may help you define your major definite purpose.
