Harry Potter Books to Go Digital

Author J.K. Rowling will launch a website in October that promises more material, more experiences and a place to exclusively download Harry Potter e-books.

Harry Potter fans, hang on to your sorting hats.

Earlier this month, author J.K. Rowling announced the launch of a new website, Pottermore, in October 2011. Details of the site, which promises to add digital content to the world of Harry Potter, are still something of a mystery. One thing is for certain, though. Pottermore will be the only place where you'll be able to download Harry Potter books.

There are several guesses about what Pottermore (get it, PotterMORE?) will offer fans of the series. Some of the information comes from J.K. Rowling herself, who has hinted at the possibility of interactive worlds, artistic outlets and even the ability to help shape the world.

"Just as I have contributed to the website, everyone else will be able to join in by submitting their own comments, drawings and other content in a safe and friendly environment--Pottermore has been designed as a place to share the stories with your friends as you journey through the site," said Rowling in a video statement on the front page of the site.

So far, it looks like the e-books will be available for purchase for all digital e-book readers. A spokesperson for  in New York City confirmed that the books will be available on the Nook e-reader, but said the e-books will have to be downloaded via the Pottermore site.

The full site launches in October, and on-site registration starts July 31 (that's Harry Potter's birthday for all you Muggles). Until then, readers will just have to flip pages and dream.
