A Hellertown woman who told a federal jury in Philadelphia that she was wrongly fired from her job as a cook at Saucon Valley Manor in the borough was awarded a settlement of $109,000 following a five-day trial, the Express-Times reported.

According to the article, Julie Diaz told the court she was unfairly let go when she took a 30-day leave of absence to receive treatment for a drinking problem in 2010, which it was argued was a violation of the the federal Family and Medical Leave Act.
