Caverns to Host 'Small Business Saturday' Event

Lost River Caverns in Hellertown is hosting the event to encourage area residents to shop locally and small for the holidays.

The holidays should be a time of good cheer for all merchants, but have felt left out in the cold by the Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals and mega-sales that increasingly draw shoppers away from Main Streets after Thanksgiving.

In response to this trend, in 2010 American Express created a shopping holiday called "Small Business Saturday," which "encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local," according to Wikipedia.

The company has promoted Small Business Saturday via an advertising campaign that includes ads on Patch.com home pages, and this year a Hellertown business is also joining the small business support system by hosting a special gathering of local artists and non-profit organizations in conjunction with the Nov. 26 holiday.
