Civil War Exhibit Opens at Easton Museum

Exhibit at the Sigal Museum looks at how the epic conflict affected Northampton County.

How did the Civil War change Northampton County? And what role did the county's residents play in the war?

An exhibit that opened Saturday at the  in downtown Easton tries to answer those questions.

"Northampton County and the Civil War" explores a variety of issues, including the abolition movement; the role of women; the role of contemporary media, medicine and music during the war; and how Easton's Lafayette College played a part in the conflict.

The exhibit featuring the men of chronicles the stories of these men through the war to their celebrated community status as veterans. 

“The visitor to this exhibit will experience the Civil War’s impact on Northampton County, from pre-war turmoil, through the battles and into the soldier’s life post-war,” said curator Andria Zaia in a news release.

  • A Confederate flag captured at Frederick City, Maryland in 1861 by Sergeant Joseph Oliver of the 1st Pa. Vol. Regiment
  • Artillery shell jacket of William Trumbore
  • Officer's jacket of Frank Reeder
  • Bugle, drums and cornet
  • Cavalry uniform 
  • Civil War diaries
  • Slave bill of sale
  • Letters home written by soldiers 
  • Confederate and U.S. federal currency 
  • Firearms, swords and sabers
  • Sheet music of the regimental bands
