Saucon Valley Farmers' Market Celebrates Another Successful Season

End-of-Season Luncheon Held at Hellertown Diner

The volunteers and vendors who have helped make the Saucon Valley Farmers' Market a local institution celebrated the end of another successful season with a luncheon at the Hellertown Diner Sunday afternoon.

Dozens of volunteer committee members--including Hellertown mayor Richard Fluck--filled the diner's private dining room, where they shared laughs and good food while exchanging gifts and stories.

Farmers' market chairperson Shelley Goldberg delivered a short speech at the luncheon, telling attendees that, "It's because of everyone here that the farmers' market is such a success."

Goldberg, a Hellertown resident, helped found the farmers' market in 2006 and has chaired it ever since.

Nevertheless, she emphasized the role that all the volunteers who work at the market each week have played in its continued growth.

"The farmers' market is not about the 'I,' it's about the 'we,'" she explained, referring to the organizational philosophy which also guides the volunteer committee overseeing the market's operation.

Some of the things people who visit the market regularly like about it include the variety of goods offered by more than a dozen regular vendors, free parking, convenience, and the ability to purchase locally-grown food, she said.

One visitor reported that she plans to have an "all-local Thanksgiving (dinner)" made with food she purchased at the Saucon Valley Farmers' Market, Goldberg added.

Goldberg also took time to thank farmers and longtime farmers' market vendors Lorraine and Bill Mineo, who recently decided to close their produce business, for their participation in the Saucon Valley Farmers' Market.

The Mineos made the decision to close LC's Farm, they said, in order to spend more time with their children and grandchildren, but plan to continue growing pesticide-free produce for friends and family.

"We just want you to know that you have inspired us," Goldberg said to the Mineos, as she presented them with a framed photograph of their stand at the market.

Mayor Fluck also presented the Mineos with a specially-prepared certificate of appreciation in honor of their years of service.

The Saucon Valley Farmers' Market is open annually from May through November in Water Street Park in Hellertown.
