Routes Into and Out of Hellertown: Are There Enough?

There are approximately eight roads that allow motorists and—in some cases—pedestrians to travel into and out of the borough.

A look at a map of Hellertown shows about eight roads that lead into and out of the borough like spokes on a wheel. For a town that's just 1.3 square miles in size, with a population of about 6,000 people, that may seem like an adequate number...but is it?

These are the routes:

  • Main Street (Route 412) NORTH
  • Main Street (Route 412) SOUTH
  • Cherry Lane/Easton Road
  • Apple Street
  • Durham Street/Wassergass Road
  • East Walnut Street/Panther Way
  • West Walnut Street/Skibo Road
  • Water Street/Friedensville Road

A ninth road that would allow motorists and pedestrians at the north end of town ingress and egress is unavailable because of a bridge closure.

The timber High Street Bridge was closed in June 2011, and provided access to Ravena Street and Silvex Road, to the west and north of the borough.

Route 412 at the north end of town is currently under construction, which has created congestion near the Hellertown/Bethlehem exit on I-78.

In between Route 412's northernmost Hellertown section and High Street is a neighborhood that's primarily residential, with a few businesses that are mostly located along Main Street.

To get out of that neighbhorhood by car or on foot, residents and customers of those businesses must:

  • Cross Route 412 to reach one of the roads that lead east out of Hellertown.
  • Drive north on Route 412, past the I-78 interchange, into Bethlehem.
  • Drive south to Water Street to reach points to the east or west.

Whether or not you live, shop or travel through the northwest corner of Hellertown, do you think there is adequate access into and out of the borough, generally speaking? Are the roads of sufficient quality to handle the traffic volume? Are the routes in and out of town safe? Tell us in the comments.
