New Nockamixon Trail System to Open Sunday

The grand opening of a new multi-use biking and hiking trail system in Bucks County's Nockamixon State Park is scheduled for 10am at the Haycock boat launch.

Something exciting is happening at Nockamixon State Park in Bucks County this weekend.

At 10am on Sunday, Oct. 9, a ribbon will be cut on a new multi-use biking and hiking trail system that has been planned since 2008 and under construction for the last year.

The still-unfinished trail system features more than 9 miles of completed trail in the 5,283-acre park's eastern area, which is known as Haycock Cove.

According to a press release about the opening, more than 2,000 volunteer hours have been invested in the project by members of Valley Mountain Bikers and the Philadelphia Mountain Biking Association.

Both groups will join with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) for the ribbon-cutting and a celebration to follow, which will be held at the Haycock boat launch off Route 563 (Mountainview Drive), about a mile-and-a-half west of Route 412.

From 10am to 2pm visitors will enjoy complimentary food and drinks, as well as the opportunity to participate in guided mountain bike rides on the new trails, which are suitable for riders of all ability levels.

A number of local bike shops will be on hand to provide free bike demonstrations and tech support, and a raffle will be held to help raise funds for the Tower Road parking lot expansion project.

Donations that will be earmarked for the expansion of the parking area as well as the construction of a kiosk at the trailhead will also be accepted at the entrance to the event and at the Valley Mountain Bikers tent.
