Hellertown's Original Jail is Still Standing: Did You Know?

Along a quiet back alley just a stone's throw from the hustle and bustle of Main Street in downtown Hellertown sits the borough's original jail.

Along a quiet back alley that is just a stone's throw from the hustle and bustle of Main Street in downtown Hellertown sits the borough's original jail.

Built in 1872, the tiny stone structure on Laubach Street bears a plaque that attests to its historic significance.

According to the plaque, the stone jail was used until 1900, when prisoners were relocated to a new borough building on Saucon Street.

The original "lock-up" was built on land owned by Thomas R. Laubach according to the plaque, which was placed on the building by the Hellertown Historical Society in 1990.
