Car Show Coming Back for Community Day

A popular vintage automobile show will return for Hellertown-Lower Saucon Community Day 2011.

Love vintage cars? Then you'll want to be in attendance at Hellertown-Lower Saucon Community Day on Saturday, Aug. 20 between 3 and 8pm.

The popular vintage car show that in years past has been a major part of Community Day is returning after being cancelled in 2010, organizers revealed at a March 29 planning meeting.

Along with all of the other Community Day activities planned for this year, the car show will be held in Hellertown's .

Organizers emphasized the fact that this year, for the first time, the entire one-day event will be held in the park.

Prior to this year, morning and early afternoon activities had been held next to , but the increasing size and scope of the event made logistics challenging for the planning committee.

The need for more space was ultimately what prompted a decision to hold the now decade-old festival exclusively in the park, organizers said.

This year's Community Day will kick off an hour later than last year's did, with an opening ceremony scheduled for 10am.

Proclamations honoring longtime Hellertown and Lower Saucon Township residents will be read at noon, although the committee hasn't yet announced which residents or business owners will be honored.

The committe is also still in the process of choosing a band to perform in the evening, and a steel band from Easton was one group suggested to headline the event.

Other performers will include students from En Avant School of Dance and The Deadliners, who will perform from 1 to 3pm.

A kids area will be set up near the pavilion and more than 60 vendors will occupy the central space next to it, according to an aerial map of the park distributed by the organizing committee.

Satellite parking is expected to be available next to , although volunteers will be needed to help direct cars into place if that is the case.

Hellertown Borough Business Coordinator Mary Himmelberger announced that 100 posters advertising the event will be printed and hung up around town, and said the organizing committee is still in the process of securing sponsorships for this year's Community Day.

Although attendance in previous years has varied due to weather, organizers estimated that 2,000 to 4,000 people will attend this year's event.

Noting that this year will mark the first time the event will be held entirely in the park, organizer Craig Medei commented that "there are going to be some glitches."

"It's going to be trial and error," he added.

However, the committee expressed hopefulness that with lots of advance promotion--and reminders about the change in venue--this year's event will be a resounding success.
