Bites Nearby: Hellertown Deli & Pita House

Located on Main Street in Hellertown is the Hellertown Deli & Pita House--a unique establishment that offers much more than standard deli fare.

Conveniently located along Main Street near the center of Hellertown is the .

While their menu includes a great selection of both 6 and 12 inch hoagies made with top-of-the-line Boar’s Head cold cuts, it also includes a surprising and mouth-watering selection of healthy Middle Eastern choices.

Owner Sam Attieh is quick to offer samples of these selections to new visitors, which I was treated to during my visit. Since the only Middle Eastern foods already familiar to me were hummus and baklava, he kindly offered a few helpful suggestions along the way.

The wheat salad, which is described on their menu as being made with cracked wheat, parsley, onions and tomato sauce, was delicious. I was also treated to a sample of Attieh’s pomegranate dressing, which is used on both his Fava Bean and Fattoush salads. It had such a fresh and crisp taste I was tempted to also get a salad for my late lunch.

The buffalo wrap was my choice, however. Made with two chicken tenders “buffaloed” with lettuce and tomato, I decided to have the wrap made to order with Attieh's homemade honey bar-b-que sauce instead of the buffalo sauce. The sauce had the perfect ‘kick’ along with the honey sweetness. There was also a choice of wrap flavors, from the typical plain to a southwestern style that I chose. The wrap came generously loaded with chicken and all in all was a delicious suggestion.

Other notable menu selections are grape leaves (also available meatless), baba-ghanoug, house yogurt made with no additives, and my favorite, baklava. Attieh and his wife also cater events and make their baklava a little differently in that they roll it, thus eliminating hosts from having to worry about utensils and plates for their appetizers. While it may not look like what you’re used to, the taste is certainly there, leaving you wanting more.

For those looking for the usual deli items, the Hellertown Deli & Pita House offers cheesesteaks, grilled reubens made with turkey or corned beef, and a New York Melt made with pastrami, sauerkraut, Swiss and deli mustard, and served on rye bread.

For those who crave red meat, the deli's burger menu offers not only variety but also some familiar names. The Steel Town burger is made with BBQ sauce, bacon and American cheese. The Mountain Hawk burger includes BBQ sauce and American cheese topped with an onion straw nest. And those who enjoy something along the lines of a California burger will want to savor the Lost River Caverns burger, which is made with lettuce, tomato, onions, mushrooms, mayonnaise and Swiss cheese.

Wraps include the Iron Pigs wrap, made with bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise, and the Mediterranean Grilled Chicken wrap, which is Attieh’s suggestion. The marinated chicken breast wrap comes with lettuce, tomato, onions and a dill sauce. In looking over the menu one question came to mind--does Mayor Fluck enjoy their Mayor Burger?
