9 Tips to Help Kids Stay Safe During Summer Swim Season

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that pool or spa owners with children take these precautions.

Before you do a cannonball into the deep end of summer fun, check out these pool safety tips from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

  1. Never leave a child unattended at a pool or spa. Always watch your child when she or he is in or near the water.
  2. Keep children away from pool drains, pipes and other openings to prevent entrapment.
  3. Keep a phone handy when at the pool. Check the pool/spa first if a child is missing.
  4. Make sure you and your child know how to swim.
  5. Learn CPR.
  6. If a child is missing, look for him or her in the pool or spa first.
  7. Install and use a lockable safety cover on your spa.
  8. Install gate alarms to let you know when kids go near the water.
  9. Install a four-foot tall (or higher) fence around your pool and use self-latching and self-closing gates. If your neighbors have pools, ask them to do the same.
