400 Kids to Descend on Dimmick Park Tuesday

A regional YMCA Field Day will be held in Hellertown's Dimmick Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

A regional YMCA Field Day will be held at Dimmick Park Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with approximately 400 children and 80 counselors expected to be in attendance.

Hellertown Borough Council gave permission to hold the event last week, after Chris Brown of the Bethlehem YMCA explained the event and Public Works Director Tom Henshaw said there would be enough time to set up for Hellertown-Lower Saucon Community Day in the wake of it.

Community Day will be held in the park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Brown said the children who participate in Field Day will be from many of the YMCAs in the Lehigh Valley area, which have recently been combining forces as part of a major reorganization.

At the Field Day, the children will participate in traditional outdoor activities and games such as tug of war and water races, he said.

"Thank you for considering Hellertown as a venue for this. I think it's a compliment to the borough," councilwoman Gail Nolf told Brown.

"We appreciate the location," he replied. "It's a beautiful park."

Councilman Tom Rieger said he understood that the YMCAs have been involved in a reorganization, but hopes they will be able to provide the borough with more notice if they plan to hold another large event in a Hellertown park in the future.
