Some Pics from the 'Before Time'

I talk about dinosaurs, ghosts and plastic. There are some pictures at the end. Some people say they make you go insane. But I made those people up. Because I'm so insane.

I started taking film photography way back in the winter of my freshman year of college. I'm only 20 and still in college so it's pretty easy to remember. I had just finished fighting the dinosaur hordes that were attacking the Lehigh Valley. You guys remember that? I thought you would. Anywho, I was cleaning the radioactive time blood off my sword when I noticed a box in my dorm. It's like it appeared there by magic. In fact, I think it did. But I'm distracting myself. I'll try to stop.

I had purchased the Lomography 120 Holga camera. It's a big plastic thing that looks like it would shoot water at you. Here's a picture of my friend, Dave holding one.

I immediately fell in love with it. I felt like MacGyver whenever I used it. It was meant for 120mm film, which is an older, larger film that's expensive to buy and develop. I'm in college and therefore eternally poor, so I went a different route. I 'Frankensteined' this thing with tape, rubber bands and cardboard to make it use 35mm film, which is what those of you who have used film cameras are used to. My early attempts with it were... fun. I didn't take great art but I did learn a lot about the camera and what I enjoyed taking pictures of. The great thing about this camera is its lack of sophistication. It's basically a box with a plastic lens in it. Because it doesn't automatically wind the film as I used it, I could keep exposing pictures onto the same piece of the film. This means pictures would have 'ghost' images of other pictures on top of them. I'll explain more about how that works in later posts. Suffice it to say, it's some trippy stuff.
