Ten candidates—five Republicans, five Democrats—will face off this fall for five open seats on Northampton County Council. Voters in both parties made their nominations Tuesday, choosing a mix of veteran county officials and poltiical newcomers. Bethlehem mayor will face off against Republican John Brown in November in Northampton County Executive race.
Northampton County Democrats appear to have chosen Bethlehem Mayor John Callahan as their pick for the next county executive. Unofficial results from the county election office showed Callahan leading challengers Glenn Reibman, the former executive, and county Councilman Lamont McClure. Results from WFMZ had Callahan winning 50 percent of the vote with 82 percent of precints reporting. Callahan will face Republican John Brown in this year's general election. Brown, the mayor of Bangor, had no opposition for his party's nomination. The winner will replace John Stoffa, who is not seeking re-election. The Saucon Valley School Board primary features 11 cross-filed candidates running for four seats.
Voters have plenty of candidates to choose from in the Saucon Valley School Board primary on Tuesday. Eleven candidates—three incumbents and eight challengers—are running for four seats. All candidates are cross-filed. The top four vote-getters on each ticket will advance to the general election. If the same four candidates get the most votes on both the Republican and Democratic ballots, the election will essentially be decided in the primary barring any write-in campaigns in the fall. During a recent interview with the Express-Times editorial board, Northampton County Executive candidate Glenn Reibman talked about revisiting the idea of building an interchange at Route 378 and I-78 in Lower Saucon Township.
Although Lower Saucon Township residents fought a proposal to build an interchange at Route 378 and Interstate 78 nearly three decades ago, Democratic Northampton County Executive candidate Glenn Reibman said in a recent interview with the paper's editorial board that in his opinion it wouldn't hurt to revisit the idea. In the April 30 interview, Reibman said it was unclear why the interchange wasn't built when the interstate was constructed in the mid-late 1980s, and added that he would support a county-financed feasibility study before approaching the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) about the proposal.
