It seems like a perennially popular Halloween-time question in this area: When should Trick-or-Treat be held?

Some local residents say they would prefer that it be held on Oct. 31, i.e. Halloween night, while others argue it should be held on the afternoon of the Sunday before Halloween.

Sunday afternoon Trick-or-Treat was the longstanding tradition in Hellertown and Lower Saucon Township until several years ago, when it was decided that the event should coincide with Trick-or-Treat in neighboring Bethlehem.

Bethlehem and many other Lehigh Valley communities have long scheduled Trick-or-Treat for 6-8pm on the Friday before Halloween.

And like it or not, that's when it will be held in Hellertown and Lower Saucon Township this year.

The rationale for the change to Friday night in the Saucon Valley was to help prevent 'double-dipping' by overeager children, some of whom were reportedly descending upon Hellertown neighborhoods the Sunday after they had collected candy in their home municipalities.

Is this an important topic? Or is all the fuss much ado about nothing?

When and why was it ever switched to a different day?
The Lehigh Valley is the only area I know of that does this. I’ve never heard the reason why.

The reason that's always been given is to avoid having Trick-or-Treat on a school night, because obviously, if it's always held on Oct. 31, it will often fall on a weekday.

in the article both Friday and Sunday are mentioned as being the day for Trick or Treat. Which is it?

Trick-or-Treat is in fact this Friday, Oct. 26 from 6-8pm. Sorry for any confusion the typo may have caused.

The day itself means little to me so long as we are scheduled for the same night as Bethlehem. A few years ago, there were literally 'van-loads' of kids being carted in from other towns. We were out of an obscene amount of candy before we could get to all of the Hellertown kids. It was ridiculous.

yes . The same night as Bethlehem is a must! I also experienced the vans full of imports. It is a travesty! It is also much harder to keep an eye on the neighborhood kids and creates an unsafe situation.

I think kids should be allowed to have some fun on Halloween. It's the one you time of the year they look forward to celebrating other than Christmas, and we shouldn' t take that away from them. After all there is enough problems in the world, we don't need to add to it. Brenda Bealer

I have 2 small kids and I refuse to have them trick or treat on a school night. It's too much for them and for me to get them ready and it would be exhausting to them. I liked it way better when it was Sundays from 4-6. I live in Lower Saucon where there are no sidewalks or street lights... IT IS TOO DARK and dangerous. Let the Hellertown people have their Trick or Treat on Friday night from 6-8 and Lower Saucon can have theirs on Sunday from 4-6. My area of Lower Saucon never had a problem with out of towners, however I can't speak for everyone in Lower Saucon. By the way, my Mom used to take us to Fountain Hill to trick or treat because Lower Saucon has no sidewalks or street lights. We handed out candy on Lower Saucon's trick or treat night so we weren't double dipping.

I know my son (7) doesn't care wich day Halloween is actually on, as long as he gets to dress up and go trick-or-treating with his friends, Friday is fine for us. Plus it's easier on Fridays vs weekdays for parents to get home from work in time.

It should be done on Halloween. In 46 years and living in several towns everyone has always done it on Halloween. It's a holiday for the kids to enjoy, regardless of what town they are from. People worry too much. Just let the kids have fun!!!

I've never seen these as problems before because I've never heard of trick or treating on any other day besides Halloween. It's a kids day and it should be open to them to be out during the day and at night. We shouldn't regulate holidays to make them more convenient, people can celebrate as much as they choose to or not to.
