Tell Us: Does Hellertown Have a 'Deer Problem?'
Oh deer! A Patch reader says deer roaming borough streets could hurt themselves or residents.
Have you ever seen a deer in Hellertown? If you have, did it concern you?
Patch reader Robin Hudak Kelchner says she has seen deer in town, and she shared her concerns in an Oct. 24 post on Hellertown Patch's Facebook page.
"(I) took my 7 month old son and boxer for a walk...and 4 deer were standing on Miller street, right off Easton Road. Last week my husband and I saw them on Third Avenue," Kelchner said. "Quite a shock when you're out on a stroll and you come upon them here in town."
She said the animals are finding their way into town via the rail trail and through Silver Creek Country Club.
"(I) hope for the safety of the deer and residents that no one gets hurt!" she added.
Do you think deer in the borough are a public safety issue? If so, what do you think should be done to keep them outside of town?

There isn’t a Deer Problem.
There is an overdevelopment problem in and around the area.
They are going to roam somewhere.

Walter, you seem to be contradicting yourself. You rightly say that development will cause the deer to roam somewhere and if that somewhere is Hellertown, then we do have "Deer Problem." Please correct me if my logic is lacking.

Well Bob, I guess you are right.
We had better kill all of the deer before anything bad should happen.

There have always been deer in Hellertown, what's the big deal? I can remember seeing deer all over town 30 years ago. I really don't see a problem.

so true Rhennak .... I used to live on Courtright st. and often when I left for work before light there would be deer in the yard. They are naturally inquisative, and like to roam at night

Last week I saw 6 deer, in the middle of the road, at the corner of NJ Ave and Apple St. The same herd often beds down in my backyard. A few weeks ago, a small doe collided with me as I came out from under my porch. No injuries to either party, but I was sure glad it was a doe and not the buck with a 6 pt. rack. I'd be surprised if there isn't a deer-car collision on Apple St sometime soon

I really think they should remove deer crossing signs to discourage them from even entering the lehigh valley

Sharon, I assume you said that with tounge firmly in cheek. And that would be funny, but for the fact that hundreds fo people are killed evey year in deer-car collisions. When I see a deer crossing sign, I'm even more cautious.

I remember when a buck crashed thru the glass at the Grants store. If you know where I mean, then you know how long ago deer have been living among us. Unless you want to kill em all (which the game commision and insurance co. do) we need to live with them.

Bob, I have to say that you are partially correct about deer-car collisions. However.....most of these deaths (sadly) are related to people trying to avoid colliding with deer(s) & not actually hitting them. Deer & people have co-habited this area for as long as I can remember so is it a problem ? I think no...people just have to be a little more careful. Luckily for you deer day is quickly approaching so go Gung Ho if you think you can outsmart them...I'm with you Walter, LS Brother & Rhennak.

OK. I'll write it. I don't really think we would be any worse off if there were no deer around, period. That said, I asked the PA Fish & Game Commission about that and they said, this is unbelievable, that deer bring $2 billion of tourism to Pennsylvania every year. That is, according to the Fish & Game Commission, people actually travel to Pennsylvania from other states to see all our deer and spend all that doe while they're here. If only they would take the deer with them! Coincidentally, according to companies that provide car insurance, the annual toll in Pennsylvania from vehicular accidents related to deer is also $2 billion. So it's a wash. Throw in all the crops lost by farmers, reported to sometimes be 35% of their corn and soybean harvest, and the ticks with Lyme disease, not to bring up all the flowers and vegetables, I say we round them all up and move the deer somewhere else, anywhere else.

How bout we send you some place else Andrew. You obviously know nothing about what the G C calls their "deer management" program. In this area which is called area 5C. you can get as many doe licenses as you want to buy. You can kill them this year from Sept. 15th till Jan. 26,2013. This helps explain why you see deer in the populated areas. Their numbers have been greatly reduced everywhere else. Oh, and by the way, the deer ticks would be here with or without the deer.

Lower Saucon Brother - You are correct, I know nothing about the Game Commission's "deer management" program. I do know that where local farmers are concerned, red tags or otherwise, "deer management" isn't working. And you are also correct, we would probably have deer ticks even without deer, although various sources say the ticks favor deer for their hosts. And I imagine the little buggers aren't called deer ticks for nothing.
