The Saucon Valley Athletic Department recently announced that its 2012 Colonial League Academic All Stars are Garrett Powell and Susanne “Susi” Neher.
According to the department's press release, the Colonial League Academic All Stars are selected by taking into account three main criteria: athletic participation, academic performance and extracurricular/community involvement.
The Colonial League honored the league members’ Academic All Stars at an April 27 breakfast at Green Pond Country Club in Bethlehem Township.
The following synopses of Powell's and Neher's academic and athletic accomplishments are courtesy of the Saucon Valley Athletic Department.
Garrett Powell (Male Academic All Star): Ranked first in his class of 193, Garrett has a current GPA of 4.892. He has participated in soccer for four years, track & field for four years, cross country for one year and swimming for one year. Garrett’s academic and athletic honors include: 2012 recipient of the Donley Award for Excellence, involved in the High School Scholars Program (taking Calculus I and II at Lehigh University), 2011 Athletic Department Leadership Award winner, Most Improved Track & Field athlete in 2009 and 2010, a member of the 2009 Colonial League Soccer Championship team, has been on the highest Honor Roll for four years, and a member of the National Honor Society. Garrett’s extracurricular and community involvement include: Student Government Association (four years), Class Vice President (four years), a founding member and President/Vice President of the Guardians at Church of the Assumption BVM, a founding member of the “Shopkeepers” Music Ensemble, and a member of the Saucon Valley Jazz Band, Concert Band and Pit Orchestra for four years. After graduation, Garrett plans to attend a four-year college and study mechanical engineering.
Susanne "Susi" Neher (Female Academic All Star): Ranked second in her class of 193, Susi has a current GPA of 4.776. She has participated in swimming for four years and track & field for four years. Susi’s academic and athletic honors include: Highest Honor Roll (four years), member of the National Honor Society, Union League of Philadelphia Good Citizen Award, D.A.R. Good Citizen Award, swim team captain in 2012, and track & field throwing captain in 2012. Susi’s extracurricular and community involvement include: Dance, Girl Scouts, Model UN, National Honor Society, Spotlight Uganda, Invisible Children, Scholastic Scrimmage and Class President for three years. Susi plans to attend a four-year university for international relations, spend time being a nomad, and travel around the world.
