History Comes to Life in the Saucon Valley

The annual Saucon Valley History Day drew visitors to the Lutz-Franklin Schoolhouse, the Heller Homestead and the Wagner Grist Mill.

The annual Saucon Valley History Day celebration was held in Hellertown and Lower Saucon Township Saturday, with special events taking place at , and .

Under a breathtakingly blue sky filled with puffy white clouds, the local historical organizations that maintain the three landmarks coordinated the event together and threw open their doors to both educate and entertain members of the public.

At the historic , which is maintained by the Saucon Valley Conservancy, a Civil War encampment, a plant sale and the opening reception for the homestead gallery's Young Artists exhibit were held. Artisans and craftspeople were on hand to sell their wares, refreshments were available, and tours of the homestead and neighboring Widow's House were provided by local Girl Scouts.

Conservancy President Priscilla deLeon thanked the volunteers and artists who helped make the special day possible.

"They did a really good job today," she said, speaking from the front steps of the homestead.

At the , visitors had the opportunity to view a vintage Model T Ford, purchase refreshments, build bluebird houses with Tony Chavar, view quilt-making in action and watch local juggler and performance artist Bob Swain in action. An old-fashioned cake walk was held on the lawn in front of the school and guitarist John Samuels provided live musical entertainment.

Finally, at the in Hellertown, tours of the historic building and museum were offered and the Saucon Valley Community Center's annual Phyllis M. Schnaible Memorial Fishing Contest's kids tournament was held.
